Ranger vacancy at Sudbury Common Lands Charity

Sudbury Common Lands Charity have a vacancy for a permanent, full-time Ranger.

The Trustees of the Sudbury Common Lands Charity have managed the Common Lands in accordance with the Charity’s scheme since its formation in 1897.

The Charity manages charity-owned land as well as land on behalf of local councils (see below) some of which is designated as Local Nature Reserve, County Wildlife Site, Open Access Land and Public Rights of Way:

  • Sudbury Common Lands, Wardman and Guilford Meadows
  • Friars Meadow and Kone Vale amenity areas, the 3 km long Valley Trail, Cornard Country Park, Shawlands LNR, and The Croft and Mill Acre. This amounts to over 100 hectares in total and includes grassland (amenity and grazing), and woodland

The role of the Ranger is a very practical, hands-on physical one. The role includes a range of conservation and amenity work in all weathers and in the public eye.

The ideal person will have:

  • an interest in nature conservation and a qualification in a land-based discipline
  • some experience of working around livestock and grazing lands and other sites sympathetically for the benefit of their special landscape, habitat, and species
  • experience in the management of public open spaces
  • the physical ability to do the job and demonstrate previous experience in working effectively outdoors, day-in-day-out, in all weathers, in a physically demanding role
  • experience with the machinery and tools detailed in the job description
  • a willingness to engage positively with co-workers and volunteers
  • willing to take a DBS check
